Digital Help Services Saved My Bacon

When I heard about digital help services a few months ago I knew straight away that this was something that would fit well in my life. I spend a lot of time using computers and other digital equipment, but for some reason I’m one of those people who always end up creating havoc. I wish I didn’t but I just do and I have no idea why. In many ways I’m very savvy when it comes to all the latest gadgets, but in other ways I’m a complete nightmare. So that is why I thought I could benefit from digital help services. The fact that twenty four hour service is a phone call away really made me think it was a great idea. I signed up knowing that it probably wouldn’t be too long before I’d need this service.

Everyone in our family has their own personal computer but for some reason they all like to use mine. I suppose it is understandable as mine actually belongs to work and it has all the bells and whistles. So one of the reasons that my kids tend to use my computer is because of the huge screen it has - and this is the reason my daughter decided to finish off her thesis for her degree on my computer. She spent a few hours working on it and then saved it - she didn’t make a copy for herself. Later that evening I was downloading some photography freeware and after I installed it my computer went berserk. None of my files would open and my daughter could not get access to her thesis; naturally she was extremely upset. I was really upset for her as I knew what a tight deadline she had and the fact that she had wasted an entire afternoon had me feeling really guilty. So I decided to ring digital help services and they were wonderful. They managed to take remote control of my computer and get rid of the virus on it. Once that was fixed the files could once again be opened - peace was restored in the house.

As more and more homes today are becoming more computer orientated, many people often find they need some sort of digital help. When it comes to pc security, virus removal and virus removal tools very often are near the very top of any list.

COMPUTER VIRUSES – NOT A SICK JOKE

The good news is that computer viruses, unlike those that infect humans, can be eliminated.  The bad news is that they can have devastating consequences.

A quick internet search reveals the staggering cost of the damage that these uninvited ‘guests’ can do.  By way of example, SQL Slammer (also known as Sapphire) is estimated to have cost over a billion dollars, Code Red is estimated at 2.6 billion dollars and the cost of the ‘I Love You’ virus is put at between 10 and 15 billion dollars.

Viruses are just one type of malicious software or malware, which is the umbrella term used for all types of infection programmes such as computer worms, spyware, Trojan horses, hijackers and adware .  These are all equally as damaging whether you’re in the White House, in the boardroom of a global business organisation or at a desk at home.

If you’re in any doubt about virus removal and whether you may be at risk, consult a computer repairs specialist as soon as possible and they can quickly identify if your problems are caused by malware or are computer-related.  A computer repairs specialist in Perth, Western Australia, advises everyone who has a computer to ensure they have adequate anti-virus protection software which is updated regularly.

Here are some signs of a possible virus infection :

·         Slower than normal speeds

·         Deleted files

·         Hardware problems such as keyboard keys not working, printer issues etc

·         Disables ports

·         Can’t access discs or disc drives

·         The date and/or time are changed

·         Increases file sizes

·         Extended boot times

·         Strange noises from the computer

·         Images come up at random

·         Different error messages

·         Computer doesn’t respond or locks up

·         Crashes then restarts

·         Applications not functioning properly

Sorting out computer viruses can be a lot easier and quicker than sorting out a human virus.  Often, the computer (the patient) doesn’t have to even leave the premises to get help, and nor does the computer ‘doctor’ have to make a housecall to diagnose and fix an infection.  These days, many computers can be fixed on-line, remotely.

Just who is behind the creation of these invasive and dangerous cyber sicknesses?  Well, not all the perpetrators have been identified, but when they are, they face serious charges.  In 1998, hackers got into computers belonging to the army, government and private sector in the US, and the Solar Sunrise virus was first believed to have been planned by operatives in Iraq.  It was then discovered that it was the work of two US teenagers.  The Melissa virus, which wasn’t created to cause intentional harm, was created by an American programmer who was fined $5000 and sentenced to twenty months behind bars.  A young Filipino student was behind the hugely dangerous ‘I love You’ virus, but he got off scott free because the Philippines had no laws to prevent hacking and spreading malware.

The Sasser worm was written by a 17 year-old German high school student, and it shutdown the satellite communications for some French news agencies and forced Delta Airlines to cancel several flights.   However, authorities couldn’t prosecute him because he was a minor when he wrote it, and he was given a suspended sentence.

There are some virus creators who have escaped detection.  A reward is still on offer for the successful identification of the author or authors of the Sobig worm which infected over a million computers, and created massive amounts of internet traffic.  Recently, authorities arrested the administrators of the Mariposa botnet which infected computers in around 40 banks in 180 countries but the authors have still not been caught.  A botnet is a group of infected PCs that are all controlled by the same “command and control center” that are then used for criminal means.

The reasons people create malware range from thrill-seeking, boredom, notoriety and criminal intent.  The fact is, say Perth Computer Repairs, viruses are no sick joke.  They can compromise security, cause substantial damage and can cost both time and money to fix the damage.  They advise anyone and everyone to install a comprehensive virus protection programme to keep their computers clean.
