Speed Up Windows XP Pro Ways

Cleaning your computer’s registry as well as running the defragmentation tool have always been considered among the best things you can do to speed up Windows XP Pro, but they are not the only ones. These two have their intended functions and cannot be used to fix problems other those to which they were originally made for. With that said, there are other notable options that you have to speed up your PC like.

Run software repairs. Know if your PC is running on NTFS file system.
The speed of newer computers are said to be directly linked to their usage of the NTFS file system. The older systems – the FAT16 file system and FAT23 file system – can only dish out speed that are below of the capacity of NTFS. Access the status of your PC’s file system via My Computer in drive C. Go to Properties and check for details. If you found out that your PC is running in FAT23 file system and FAT23 file system, seriously consider upgrading.

Disable bugs in your PC. Malware, depending on the type, can harm your PC in various ways. While adware and spyware are non-malicious, by nature, these still eat up plenty of valuable computer resources which could have been used for other, more useful uses. Always have a malware detection program ready to scan and clear your computer off these unneeded and oftentimes dangerous applications.

Change the settings of the indexing service. Windows XP has services that make computer usage easier for the owners. The problem though is that sometimes the very things that were designed to help you turn your computer speed to a crawl. Among such services is the indexing service. According to many computer geeks, this service is not really that useful. This service only use up computer resources and in no significant way help the PC’s operation. If you think you can do away with this, disable it. To disable the indexing service, go to My Computer, right click on your hard drive and select Properties. Remove the check mark on the box that says, “Allow indexing service to index this hard drive for faster searching”, hit OK then close.

Disable the visual effects that you don’t need. Windows XP dish out excellent speed and brilliant visual effects. These are good save for the fact that they consume significant amount of computer resources. To boost your computer’s speed, disable some of the visual effects.

Boost startup. As you continually use your computer, it will accumulate applications that automatically launch during Startup. To know how many programs and whether you can delete some applications from the Startup folder, access the Startup tab via the MSCONFIG tool. Delete all programs that are unnecessary to boot up. To fully remove all traces of the deleted programs in the Startup folder, hit START, type services.msc, and delete the previously disabled files.

Windows XP has numerous features that users love. It can boot up within 30 seconds, for example. Make the most of its features by following the abovementioned ways to speed up Windows XP Pro.

Keep The Windows Registry Clean

Within Windows there is a central database, the registry. Information about your PC, its users, and its environment are stored in the registry. What do people mean when they talk about a “clean” Windows registry?

The registry is clean when it contains only keys and data that describe the current state of the system. That means the information concerning the system hardware, the computer’s software, and the profiles and preferences of the users is correct. For example, there are the file associations that reflect which file extensions go with which application. Applications with their directory paths and version numbers are listed, as well as installed software components like ActiveX objects. Within the registry we also find information concerning computer security. Account numbers and catalogs are held there. An enormous quantity of detailed information is kept in the registry–information that the computer needs in order to run.

With a Clean Windows Registry Come Benefits

If there are no registry errors your computer will run better, without system crashes or application errors. If the data in the registry is not accurate, the computer will not work as it should. When some of the files are moved but the registry is not corrected to reflect these changes, imagine what happens. Suddenly Windows doesn’t know where to look for the information it depends on. Sometimes Windows can continue its operations with just a hiccup, if it can find and fix the errors itself. If it has to search for lost information the system slows down; or if it can’t find the information it may terminate an application, or even crash. Many times Windows cannot detect or find the errors in the registry. Registry errors can cause cryptic error messages and all sorts of weird problems, making your system unreliable.

What happens when the registry starts to accumulate useless information that your computer no longer needs and never uses? Because Windows must search the registry database quite often, this can also be a problem. This searching is slowed down, due to the trash left in the registry. What fills the registry with junk and causes registry errors? By installing and uninstalling a single application, you can leave behind tens or even hundreds of useless registry entries. What happens when an application installation or uninstallation fails? It can cause a big mess in the registry. Unless the registry is cleaned, part of the information doesn’t remain accurate.

Another source of registry errors is computer viruses and malware. These programs that are built to harm computers can cause terrible damage.

How Is It Possible To Ensure You Have A Clean Windows Registry?

Sometimes people erase everything on the hard disk and then reinstall Windows and all of the applications to create a clean registry. Some experts will tell you to do this. But few people can afford this extreme solution. Manually editing the registry to correct the errors is another solution an expert user may choose. This procedure is not safe if you don’t know exactly what needs to be changed. Editing the registry by hand can take hours.

A safer and faster approach is to use a registry cleaner application. These programs are able to find and repair the incorrect entries in your registry. Your computer will run faster and startup faster when it has a clean Windows registry. And it will produce fewer application errors, system crashes, and error messages.
