Computer Network Design - An Overview

A network for a business organization is its nervous system. Almost all the business activities executed on the network infrastructure. As an example, all the electronic communication such as emails and VoIP will collapse if the computer network fails. In addition to that, all the electronic content sharing between the computers will fail while there is no access to the Internet. There is evidence that such scenarios have taken place in the history of information technology due to the vulnerabilities in the computer network design.

Computer network design is one of the main steps in implementing a computer network. When a home computer network is considered, there is not much need for a sophisticated computer network design. But still, there should be some kind of a primary design in order get things working correctly. This small model alone is enough to understand the importance of computer network design when it comes to business organizations.

There are many matters to be viewed when it comes to computer network design. First of all, it is the nature of the business and the networking requirements that matter when designing a computer network. If the organization is located in a large geographical area, such as a university, then the necessaries for the networking will be quite high and there can be an added complexity as well. If the organization is scatters across the country and still require the locations to be connected through a private network, then the resources required for the proposed network will be high and the computer network design will be quite complex.

The network topology plays an important role when it comes to the computer network designs. Based on the network requirements, the nature of the business, and the technology used in the business organization, the appropriate network topology should be selected. Once the network topology is finalized, the designers can carryout the task of computer network design.

In a good computer network design, the devices used are properly illustrated. This gives the organization a proper idea of what resources required and the possible cost involved in the implementation. Additionally, fail over also known as the contigency plan is also an integral part of computer network design. What is does is to discuss potential network failures and how to overcome the challenge in order to keep the business flowing as usual. Therefore, some people believe that disaster recovery too should be included in computer network design but some others believe that it is not a necessity.
